Add ReviewLoved the tour - staff was greatReport
When I went to Tracy Arm with this company, the captain was rude to the guests (yelling, interrupting, talking over), approached whales well within the 100 yard limit repeatedly, and denied climate change. Denying climate change is quite odd for someone leading tours in Alaska. Nevertheless, if you take a tour with this company, remind the captain at the beginning of the tour that you expect them to follow federal regulations regarding approaching marine mammals (ie the 100 yard approach limit). Also keep your camera rolling for if and when they hit a whale. Call the National Marine Fisheries Service enforcement hotline if you notice any violations.Report

Amazing!!!! Reviewing our photos from today's Tracy Arm cruise, I can't even believe what we experienced is real. That was one of the most amazing things. Ever. Great staff!! Really really lovely, captian too, everyone did such a great job. Packing lunch and snacks was fun. Eating them while watching glaciers calf is something I'll never forget. Thank you, this was INCREDIBLE.Report
The staff is 5 star but the vessel is a one star. The staff is very personable and knowledgeable and takes their time for each guest and makes sure they go out of their way for you to not only see Tracy Arm but every thing Tracy Arm represents. Wildlife, bears, whales, mountain goats, eagles, waterfalls and of course Sawyer Glacier and its caving.Report
The downside to this operation is that they have been doing this for so many decades that their equipment ie. Boats are very old and need replacing. They are not set up well for viewing and not very comfortable. It is all indoor seating on old bus type uncomfortable seats that sit so low to the floor that when you look out you see the frame and railing that restricts the view. They need to be raised 6 to 12 inches. The seats face forward but, you can not see out of the front of the cabin for there is a solid wall preventing any forward visibility and not allowing you to even see where you are going. The views looking up at the walls of the fjords reaching 8,000 feet into the sky are totally blocked by a solid ceiling of the boat. Since there is no upper deck this should have clear lexan panels in the the ceiling so you are able to take in the views. The boat is old, very dirty, worn out, with a very tired interior with inferior navigation equipment that is several decades old. The bathroom was so bad it was unusable and you are captive on this old dirty boat for 10 hours. Not good.
Sandwiches are made on the spot and snacks are very reasonably priced.
10 hours is too long and most people got very bored on the way back especially because this boat was not designed for good viewing. It would make a good old fishing boat, but not a scenic tour boat. Sorry, but it time to retire this old boat.
It's time to invest in a new modern, fast, economical specially designed boat with 360 degree unobstructed viewing with a glass like ceiling to be able to take in the 8,000 foot high massive walls of this beautiful fjord.
I can highly recommend the experienced crew but I would go with a different boat even if the tour price was higher.
This recommendation comes from a USCG Capt. with over 40 years in this industry building successful tour and charter operations.
Our captain today on the Ocean Endeavor disregarded approach limits for humpback whales. I mentioned it to him but he claimed we were more or less at 100 yards, we were not. He put us way too close. Their website states they comply with laws with regards to viewing marine mammals, so I hope this was not the norm and that captains are reminded of their approach limits. He spoke later about working on whale research boats so maybe he thinks laws dont apply to him anymore. Apart from that, good price, friendly staff. Minimal interpretation but I knew to expect that. I appreciate that you can bring your own food and drinks. Dress extra warmly even on a sunny day.Report
