What do you get when you mix a computer trainer on a tight budget; a hundred year old Mission style bungalow with ugly floors and a can do attitude. You get the start of a hardwood refinishing business.

Over 12 years ago, Wren bought a beautiful old Mission bungalow that he immediately named “Eleanor.” Why when asked…”It just fit.” She was grand. See through fireplace, crank windows, thick Mahogany and Pine walls, a library, tile bathrooms and oh yeah, wooden floors. Sound great doesn't it. Well the see through fireplace was falling apart, the crank windows we to, for that matter. The thick walls had about 20 years of dirt and grime. The green mosaic tile in the bathroom was so dirty that the grout was turning green also and bring up the rear were wooden floors that most likely had not been taken care of in over 70 years. Yeah, she was grand all right but she was his.

Slowly, but surely Wren began to bring her back. Cleaning something here and tearing down something there, all the time looking at those wooden floors. Finally, it was time. It was time to have someone come in and take a look at the floors. Yeah, of course have someone come into to look at them. No one in their right mind would even think to do them their selves and especially someone who had never done it before, so call in the experts.

Funny thing, when you call in an expert, you're not only getting a professional, but most of the time they come with a professional price. Wasn't the term tight budget mentioned earlier? Well Wren called someone in and the price was so high, he thought the professional misunderstood him and that he wanted new floor laid. The professional assured him that he heard correctly. The professional was politely thanked and escorted to the door.

So, Wren did what any clueless homeowner would do. He went to the internet and began studying everything he could find about sanding floors. At the end of six months of Study, he began sanding his floors. Tricky thing about sanding floors…you actually have to sand them which took some time. However, when it was all sanded and stained and coated, they were beautiful at least to him. Now, the term “to him” was used because looking back they weren't that great but they were good enough to attract attention. Friends saw the floors and he did their floors and those friends had friends that wanted their floors done and thus the birth of Hardwood Refinishers and Installations.

Hardwood Refinishers was started with the philosophy of quality and strong work ethic, not much more. But those things remain with the business today. The goal is and has always been to offer a good service at a reduced rate. Wren still believes that flooring should not cost a fortune for good quality work remembering he was once in those same shoes as other homeowners.
