About Bond Vet - East Village

Bond Vet — East Village is a modern and friendly vet located in Stuy Town, at 18th and 1st Ave. We specialize in urgent care, meaning timely medical needs for a rash, diarrhea, limping, coughing or other symptoms that indicate a non-life-threatening health issue. For prompt treatment, we offer walk-in appointments, or you can book online. Bond Vet's mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond through better pet care — we know pets and pet parents typically don't look forward to vet visits, and we don't think it has to be that way. We reimagined the experience, with warm and welcoming clinics, neutral lighting, hydration stations, dog treat bars and comfortable furniture. But our differences are not just aesthetic — we have an in-house technology team who builds better veterinary tools to make it easy for pet parents to book appointments and vets to log records and communicate with clients. We know price is a real factor when it comes to vet care, and we don't enjoy surprises, so we offer options and upfront pricing when it comes to diagnostics and next steps. We'll never pressure you into doing more tests and treatments than you are comfortable doing, and we'll help you file pet insurance claims because we know that's a process. In addition to urgent care treatment, Bond Vet offers a wide range of veterinary services including routine wellness exams, vaccinations, dental cleanings, spays, neuters, mass removal, orthopedic surgeries and more. Because veterinary medicine is known to be a stressful industry, Bond Vet prioritizes our team's mental health and emotional well-being — taking better care of our people helps them take better care of your pet. You can bring your pet to Bond Vet solely for urgent care, or we can be your primary care vet; either way, we'll provide top-notch care for your pet. Bond Vet - East Village is located at 282 1st Avenue in Manhattan, and is open from 10am to 8pm every day, including holidays. Walk in or book online at bondvet.

The people here are very nice, but I get the feeling that charts aren't thoroughly read/small things often get lost in the shuffle/miscommunicated when questioned are relayed to vets and then answers are relayed back to clients, which has led to multiple frustrations for me as we've been treating my 6 month puppy for giardia/diarrhea.

The full breakdown:
- Our dog was initially put on a chicken and rice diet along with his giardia treatment. The vet told us 1/2 cup each chicken and rice per meal. This is only about 520 cals/day; a growing puppy his size needs about 1000. He lost 1.5 pounds in a week.

- Since his diarrhea wasn't improving a few days after the first course of antiparasitics and he was peeing and drinking a lot that day, I called and asked if there was anything we should do. I was told to bring in stool and urine samples. Once at the vet I was told the stool sample was unnecessary—there was no point in checking his stool until the 3 week mark— and the urine issue was unlikely to be related to the diarrhea/an ideal test would be from the first pee of the day. When I asked the vet whether she thought I should do the urine test, she responded by telling me the levels his specific gravity would have to be at. He was given probiotics and advised to stay on chicken and rice, with vague instructions that I could "feed him more" after I brought up the weight loss.

-A week later, after the probiotics worked for a couple of days and then diarrhea returned, I called to update them on this and asked about his nutritional needs, since chicken and rice isn't a balanced meal for dogs. They emailed back saying I could come pick up "a few cans" of prescription food. Upon arriving the girl at the desk asked how much I wanted, and when I said I didn't know/asked how much he'd need, she checked with the vet, and was told to feed him "mostly wet food." I asked again how many cans I should get; the girl offered 3 or 4. I took 4, figuring there would be instructions on the can, but the can simply said to feed according to vet instructions. Doing the calorie math myself, he needed 3 cans per day. I immediately placed an order for a case of the food and emailed Bond back to clarify/confirm this diet; it took two days for Bond to approve the Chewy order, and another day for the vet to finally call me back with specific feeding instructions. On the plus side, the prescription food finally started firming up his stool.

- A couple days before he was supposed to be rechecked for giardia, I saw worms in his stool. I called bond, asking if it needed to be tested/if it was too early to test at the same time for giardia. They said to bring it in, ideally with visible worms, which I did. A day later I got test results; giardia antigen was positive but because there were no eggs in the stool, he "wasn't shedding parasites." This was obviously incorrect. After I followed up, Bond asked for another picture of the worms in the stool so they can make sure it's not tapeworms, which is frustrating because they are not in his stool every time, and if they had fully examined the first sample, they would not need another one.

-Because whoever wrote that email obviously hadn't read the previous notes, I also asked whether the giardia retreatment was definitely necessary—the email said antigens could mean he was "previously exposed" or had a minor infection. We already know he was previously exposed, and at no point earlier did the vet state his continuing diarrhea was a sign of reinfection or the treatment not working—she always stated that sometimes it takes a while to get them pooping well again—so I wanted to be sure this was necessary before potentially upsetting his digestion with more antibiotics. The nurse on the phone, however, told me his history sounded like continued giardia. At this point, though, I have no idea whose opinion I should trust at Bond.

Come for jerky buffet, stays for the exam. The friendly staff and warm surroundings made my normally terrified of vets dog comfortable from the moment we walked through the door. No more cramped cold stainless steel exam rooms.

My Regular vet was booked up and I needed to get my new kitten in to be seen last minute. They recommend that I go to Bond Vet. I made an appointment and the whole experience was great. They were efficient and compassionate. Better yet my kitty is doing much better. While I plan on keeping my primary vet, Bond Vet is my new back up. Thank you!
Update: I've been so happy with Bond that they are my new Vet!
