Our Philosophy

South Mountain Company offers integrated architecture, engineering, building, and solar energy services to residential, commercial and institutional clients. We value the harmony of beauty, craft, and science - great design, quality building, and high performance, all rolled into one!

We are placemakers. These days, we create net-zero buildings that produce as much energy as they use. For existing buildings we plan and execute Deep Energy Retrofits (DER) that result in profound energy use reduction, increased health and comfort, and greater durability.

Founded in 1975 and located on Martha's Vineyard, in Massachusetts, we limit our service area to the Vineyard and nearby communities. A worker-owned business, we care deeply about creating positive experiences and outcomes for our employees, our clients, our community, and the planet. Our goal is always to serve these several constituencies in an exemplary and responsible way that nurtures and strengthens all.

We work hard to make the community that sustains us a better place for all. We designate 10% of our profits for contributions to charitable organizations and another 10% to pro-bono work. We devote ourselves, in many ways, to making solutions to our local affordable housing crisis and spreading the use of renewable energy.
