Could not recommend OKUKAN Karate and Sensei Sandra enough! For both children and adults, the classes are welcoming, challenging and always fun. It is very obvious that Sensei is passionate and has a wealth of knowledge that she is so happy to share that you can't help but feed off that energy.

So glad my daughter and I enrolled with Okukan. Sensei Sandra imparts her deep knowledge of karate in a friendly, respectful and supportive manner. She has a great rapport with her younger students, and the ever growing group of adult students, many of whom have never practiced martial arts before learn quickly. Fantastic karate school!

Excellent karate club. The children are challenged but not pushed. Quality teaching by a Sensei that is both a great teacher and practitioner.

Brilliant karate school for all ages. The kids love it and get so much. There is also a growing group of 'new to karate' adults taking it up too. Sensei Sandra is great. Thoroughly recommend.

I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of beginning martial arts as an adult at OKUKAN :) I‘ve found it beneficial for both my physical and mental well-being.

OKUKAN is a modern Japanese martial arts school of Shitokai karate, based in Melbourne, Australia. We teach the authentic Shitoryu style of karate – one of the four main styles of karate in Japan – as originally founded by Master Kenwa Mabuni and later endorsed by the World Karate Federation (WKF). Our martial arts school has a challenging karate syllabus that includes over 50 forms and a large number of effective drills. Classes in our school are strongly influenced by Japanese Buddhism and warrior culture. OKUKAN is led by Sensei Sandra Contreras, who delivers high quality karate instruction six days a week. Our form of karate is government recognized in Australia, and our form of karate is internationally endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). OKUKAN is affiliated to the World Karate Federation via its Australian representative, the Australian Karate Federation (AKF). This affiliation ensures our students learn modern martial arts that comply with international standards, and the latest developments and trends in sports karate. Our sport facility is served by public transport and is connected to safe cycle paths to help reduce CO2 emissions.
