Periodontal students learn advanced surgical procedures including dental implantation, periodontal plastic surgery, and regenerative surgery. Prevention is also a focus as students learn treatment planning, preventative techniques, and limitations of periodontal procedures.
Depending on the program, the clinical certificate in periodontics may be a part of a masters program. In these more intensive programs, students also learn about immunology, oral microbiology, epidemiology, and tissue biology. These programs give periodontists a more well-rounded and thorough knowledge of the oral structures and diseases they will treat.
