About Tamara Clarkson, LPC

Counselor for Life + Career

Hi there. I'm Tamara. Pronounced TAM-rah (like camera)!

I've partnered with adults, parents and teens over the past 9 years to process their life experiences and unpack the “I should be” or “I can't be” messages they've lived their lives by.

The clients who have most benefited from my work would describe themselves as kind and as people who would do anything for those they love. They'd say they have perfectionistic tendencies and strive to be high achievers. But they ultimately carry feelings of inadequacy because they feel like they're either not enough or they're disappointing those they love most. This struggle tends to be one they keep to themselves as they don't want to bother those around them with these complicated feelings.

I've found that people naturally undervalue their strengths and accomplishments, and this prevents them from recognizing their true value. The good news, though, is that these are only stories, and stories can be rewritten to help us grow and flourish personally, professionally, and creatively.

How do I know? I've had to rewrite my story and disregard the false messages I was taught at a young age. When I finally stopped, looked inward, and experienced good therapy, I saw how much grit I possessed. I found that I could break through old patterns and learn new things: how to communicate, how to deal with conflict, and how to allow myself to be seen and loved.

I offer judgment-free counseling that aims to inspire and develop rather than shame and impose. I view the counseling experience as a partnership and an alliance. I will respect and honor your disclosures and help you work toward developing tools and strategies to take control of your narrative.

I utilize a number of counseling modalities, including Person-Centered, Strengths-Based, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Attachment Theory, and Mindfulness. Above all else, I will listen to your story and provide counseling that is best suited to you.

Those who have partnered with me leave feeling empowered in who they are, understanding that they are worthy of love and this life they've been given. They throw away the “all-or-nothing” mentality, and become more resilient human beings.

In my free time, I hone my vocation through reading stacks of books that just keep growing. I am that 30-something who has an obsession with plants and doesn't let my urban environment get in the way. As a partner and parent, I strive to live mindfully with my family and embrace the beauty this life has to offer.

Counseling is not just about resolving the now. It's about helping you create your forever. If you are ready to begin writing the next chapter of your life story, book an appointment today or schedule a free consultation call. I can't wait to meet you.

Services Tamara Clarkson, LPC Offers

Who do you work with?
I partner with adults, parents, and teens (17-19 years of age) on a range of issues, from depression and anxiety to career fulfillment and the job search.

How must does a session cost?
Sessions are $170 for your first counseling or coaching session (60 minutes), then $150 for every session thereafter (50 minutes).

Resume/CV writing services are $325. This includes a 50 minute session + editing.

I also offer job search packages if you're looking to cover a series of topics. Email me with what you're looking for at [email protected].

If you take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory (SII), they are $50. Wondering what these inventories look like? A sample of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Sample is here and and sample of the Strong Interest Inventory is here.

Do you take insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider and don't bill insurance for treatment. If the cost of counseling seems out of reach, we can explore the following options:

Use pre-tax dollars. Did you know that you can use your Health Savings or Flexible Spending Accounts to pay for counseling?

Some insurance companies may partially reimburse you for my services as an out-of-network provider. I can provide a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. That means you'll pay the session fees at the time of our appointment and, depending on your plan, a certain percentage of that may be paid to you by your insurance company. I recommend calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to find out what reimbursement will look like for an out-of-network provider.

Check if you or your spouse's employer has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAP is an employee benefit that provides its users with a specified number of sessions or allotted funds. Many times, the EAP can either cover therapy or career counseling.

What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept credit cards. Payment is processed at the time of service.

What is your cancellation policy?
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Before your appointment, you'll receive a reminder email and/or reminder text message, ensuring you have adequate time to reschedule your appointment if necessary. If you aren't able to cancel within the 24-hour window, you'll be charged the full fee.

How long is a session? How often should we meet?
Your first session will be 60 minutes so we can go through your paperwork, identify your goals, and discuss how we can work together. Every session thereafter is 50 minutes.

In terms of appointment frequency for counseling, I recommend clients initially schedule for once a week. Many times, after clients make progress, they move to meeting every other week, then every month, then graduate from therapy.

For career counseling or job search coaching, clients typically have a range of 1-8 sessions based on their needs.
