From 1998 to 2001 SDI produced 2,100 handmade units generating $200,000 in sales. During this period we won three "Best New Product" awards, including the Birding Industry Best New Product award in 1998 and endorsements from major natural theme retailers such as Discovery and Wild Bird Marketplace. Despite these successes, early progress was limited by our high cost and lack of a business plan.

In 2003 the company focused on writing a business plan and in September of that year placed 5th in the TEI Fuel Business Plan Competition.

In 2007 re-design efforts yielded our current prototype offering improved performance and reduced costs and the company was able to complete a first run of 1600 units. Expected investments did not materialize as a result of the economic downturn. This left the company with no marketing budget. Expenses were kept to a minimum and the company has been able to use the time to design new models with a constant eye on "green" manufacturing techniques. Final payment on tooling will be paid this year and we are encouraged that 2012 promises to be productive as well as profitable.
