Harbor Country Day School is a small independent day school for children in grades Nursery through Eighth. Housed in a former private estate, the school was founded by a group of families in 1958.
Harbor offers powerful academics, a supportive and safe environment, SmartBoards and MACs for all, great art and music and strong phys ed for all students. Its maximum class size is 16, allowing a fully differentiated approach to teaching. Nearly all Harbor graduates are placed in honors or advanced courses when they enter secondary school.

In the last few weeks we have seen a little flurry of negative commentary about Harbor on rating sites for schools. It's fairly clear that the commentary is coming from one or two disgruntled families who have left the school, including one family who was asked to leave. My advice is to do as this previous commenter has advised: do your own homework rather than believing the rants you see on web sites. Ask about scores on SSATs, ask how graduates do in subsequent secondary schools, ask current parents about current teachers. Visit the school on a school day; visitors are always welcome. Look around. Speak to the Head of School. See if what you observe squares with the negative comments you are reading. I work at Harbor, and you could argue either that I have a positive bias or that I know the school extremely well. I have known a lot of independent schools, and I came here came here because of the Head of School and his vision. I believe Harbor is a terrific small school. Does it have issues? Of course it does; what school, what organization of any kind, does not have issues? The real question is: are those issues identified, acknowledged and addressed? And they are. Come visit and see for yourself.Report

Save your money and stay far away from this school. Despite what their advertising and claiming as wonderful "educational opportunities and upgrades" - it's all hype. This school unfortunately is not even in the same league as other reputable private schools but it sure tries to make you believe that it is. If you live in a good public school district stick with that - your child will get everything he or she needs and countless opportunities for extra curricula as well as sports. The sports at this school are sub par and that's because there just aren't enough kids so it limits their potential and the sports they can offer. Sports are the best in public and parachoial schools. Be warned of this school - do your research and homework but in the end just stay away. If you decide to send your child to a private school just make sure it isn't this one.Report
