"This is my story of how some times an adversity can be a blessing in disguise. The chiropractor I had at the time routinely adjusted me left shoulder when I saw him. After one of those adjustments I soon went back to see him, because the adjustment did not work out well. He then said he was going to adjust the shoulder in a new way. He had me lay down on my back on the table instead of sitting straight up as previously. Immediately after he had made the "new" adjustment I sensed that something was wrong. When I moved my arm after the adjustment I could feel a decreased mobility in my left arm. The chiropractor told me I should give the adjustment some time to see how it worked out and I went home. That evening I felt not only a decreased mobility in my left arm, but also a lack of strenght. When I woke up the following morning I could literally not move my left arm! It was just "hanging" by the side of my body. I went back to see the chiropractor and to my astonishment he did not try to correct the even worse adjustment from the previous visit! He told me I had an infection and that I should go to the emergency room and see a medical doctor and prepare myself for a possible surgery!!! I was in great pain and I realized that if I were to see a medical doctor, he would indeed probably recommend immediate surgery. I had heard good things about Dr. Fredericks, so the following Monday morning I went to see him. Already during the first treatment he was able to get my shoulder back in place. That was such a relief, although I was still in pain and could not move my left arm. I started to see Dr. Fredericks 2-3 times a week and he gave me specific exercises to do on a daily basis to restore movement. I worked very hard on my exercises, and with those exercises and Dr. Fredericks adjustments, movement in my left arm started to come back. I improved rapidly, and as I improved, Dr. Fredericks adjusted my exercises so they were appropriate to my ongoing progress. I was able to cut down my visits with Dr. Fredericks to once a week, then every 10 days, then every two weeks, then every month and finally on an as needed basis. All the while I worked diligently on the muscle strenghtening exercises Dr. Fredericks prescribed and movement in my left arm and shoulder is now fully restored. You may ask, where is the blessing in disguise in all of this? Since I was in my 30's, I have had problems with my neck and back. I have seen many chiropractors in my days, since I have lived in different cities. My experience is that not all chiropractors are created equally. One chiropractor I saw a long time ago told me that I should under no circumstance do any muscle strenghtening exercises. That chiropractor unfortuneately probably practiced what he preached, since he himself developed problems with his shoulder and could no longer do manual adjustments with his hands. He started using a mechanical device called the activator method which did not work for me, so I left his practice. Not long after I stopped seeing him, he called and asked if I was willing to testify that I had left his practice because of his injury in his Worker's Compensation Claim. Others gave me good adjustments, but no one emphasized muscle strenghtening exercises the way Dr. Fredericks did. He gave me specific exercises and showed me how to do them the right way. He explained to me how my own participation in my healing was crucial in combination with his adjustments. The muscle strenghtening exercises was the missing link for me. Dr. Fredericks is by far the best chiropractor I have ever seen, and I still see him for regular check-ups. I am now in my mid 50's and not only is my left arm and shoulder healed, my neck and back is now in the best shape it has ever been for the last 20-25 years. That was my blessing in disguise.
