About Petra Mediterranean Bar & Grill

Petra was established in 6th century B.C. as the esteemed capital city of the Nabatean empire. She
was nestled amongst the Sandstone Mountains of Jordan, and renowned as the center of commerce for
the Northern Arabian kingdom. Caravans from Giza, Bosra, Damascus, Aqaba, and the Far East would
flood her pearly gates to barter for and sell the simplest necessities and the finest of treasures!

A.D. 106 marks the downfall of the Nabatean regime and the rise of the Roman empire. With this
change our beloved Petra lost her political independence and became known as Arabia Petraea. The
Romans chose the name Petra (meaning rock in Greek and Latin) because she was painstakingly
carved from the sandstone cliffs of Jordan.

For some time her fame and prosperity withstood the change in government but, as trade routes
changed and time took its toll, she failed to flourish as a pillar of the enterprising world.
Petra was ultimately ruined by a devastating earth quake in A.D. 363. The quake destroyed her waterworks
rendering this sandstone fortress uninhabitable. The city of Petra lay desolate for many years. In the
12th century, Crusaders established a citadel amidst her ruins. After their departure, she was left in the
hands of the natives who never managed to restore her to glory and fame.

In 1812 the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered the remains of Petra and became the
first Westerner to ever document the existence of this, once glorious, ancient city.

Scholars quickly discovered that, while industry had failed, the staggering beauty of Petra withstood
the test of time. Indeed, the city still displays a diverse array of colors and hues ranging from creamy
beige, to fiery red, and a rich chocolate brown. The layered sandstone forms intricate whorls of color
which were carefully incorporated into the Nabatean architecture.

Unesco recognized Petra as a World Heritage Site in 1985 and describing her as; One of the most
precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage. On July 7, 2007 Petra was officially inducted as
one of the New Seven Wonders of the World!
