About The Playground Theatre for Young Audiences

The PlayGround Theatre has presented several adaptations of important pieces of children's literature including: Hans Christian Andersen's The Steadfast Tin Soldier (WORLD PREMIERE - adapted by former Moscow Art Theatre director Vyacheslav Dolgachev), Gabriel García Márquez's A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings (adapted by Pulitzer-Prize winner Nilo Cruz), and most recently, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (WORLD PREMIERE - adapted by Stephanie Ansin and Fernando Calzadilla). The company has also developed an active Education and Outreach program which donates over 20,000 tickets to underserved children and their families each year. In addition, our partnership with the local public school system enables students to participate in reading and discussion groups connected to the stories we have adapted. The PlayGround Theatre also creates study guides that are distributed before performances and are available on our website; provides an InSchool Series that brings the PlayGround Theatre local school; conducts workshops that introduce young people to all aspects of the theatre; and runs an annual Musical Theatre Summer Camp. Our goal is to establish a regional repertory theatre company dedicated to the production and presentation of classical and contemporary works that entertain, educate and delight young audiences. Our magical and intelligent productions will foster intellectual, emotional and social development while reflecting the cultural diversity of South Florida.
