Tempo Cambridge Apartments

They recently changed management companies. The parking is a disaster and a lot of cars are being towed by residents from poor management. Bikes are stolen from inside the building. The packages are always piled up in the lobby or missing. They also hiked up pricing over $1000 in some cases for people who wanted to renew their lease. We used to be able to access the beautiful park behind the building - then the gates were locked because of the excess dog feces. So people now have to walk along the highway to get to the train station. I would not suggest relocating here it is completely overrated and overpriced. The pool is shallow and typically very dirty covered in people's hair. It also gets extremely over crowded and isn't worth going to in the summer. Accessing the bowling alley is nearly always booked on weekends so goodluck with that.

Hello Shay - Thank you for your feedback. Any car being towed is parked illegally in either a handicapped space, reserved space or fire lane. We have new signage coming to guest parking to alleviate some of these parking issues. We invite any resident who is up for renewal to come and discuss their offer with the leasing office. These offers are usually based on current market rents. The gate to Discovery Park have been reopened for some time now and residents were notified via email with updates to the gate access. We are very thankful the owners of Discovery Park are allowing Tempo tenants to use their property as a path to Alewife. Please contact the leasing office directly if you would like to discuss anything further. - Tempo Management

Positives: close to T, the gym is relatively comprehensive, no major issues living there.

Negatives: the lease specifies notice of 60 days of move out or incur equivalent of 1 month rent as penalty. Doesn't matter if you're 1 day or 10 days over.., penalty is equal to 1 month rent. It's on me that I signed it and didn't remember. It's on them for coming up with such an arrangement. If the concern is they need 60 days to find the next occupant, why not pro-rate the days overdue?

Edit: ABSOLUTELY agree with the management's response: review the lease carefully. I would add any publicly-accessible reviews to know what you're getting into. I'll take the time to give some tips for those willing to listen.

Additional Review:
1. When considering a unit next to the highway (like mine), take the time to listen to the sounds of the passing cars. My trick is to have the TV at a conversational volume, so to mask the noise. At bedtime, as a city dweller for many years, it hardly bothers me at night anymore.

2. Speaking of cars, if you have a vehicle, you certainly need to include a parking spot in the lease. You will find it difficult to find an open visitor spot reliably. If you have visitors, please have them come by subway, or creatively, have them park cars at the Fresh Pond Mall and pick them up. The public Alewife garage is available for a price but would not recommend overnight parking as there are some sketchy people roaming the garage lot at night.
PRO-TIP: there are VERY limited spots...previous management offered quite a deal to reclaim parking spots from early tenants. I guess many tenants were declining the lease without parking. ¯ _(?)_/¯

3. When in the bathroom, test the water pressure in the shower. I'm pro-environment and don't mind the soothing mist that comes out.

4. Fascinating clause on units with hardwood floors: "Owners/Landlord may require, and Residents hereby agree to cover at least eighty (80) percent of the total square footage of hard flooring surfaces in the Premises covered with suitable rugs at all times during the term of the Lease."

They did an amazing job building this place. My home overlooks route 2 and it's completely silent with the windows closed. Fireplace in unit is a huge plus. The leasing staff is super helpful and kind, quick to respond to emails/phone calls. The gym is my favorite amenity, so many equipment options and very clean! Glad I moved here :D

So far I've had a pleasant experience here at tempo. My apartment is beautiful and spacious. The amenities are also great! Tempo is located right next to alewife plaza, so it's easy to grab groceries and/or anything for the apartment on my way back home from work. Parking sucks. Absolutely no parking for guests. Management is also pretty bad.

Overall I enjoy my apartment, amenities, and the location - being close to groceries, parks, and Alewife station. However, there are several issues that require solutions by property management: First, if you have a car or would like to have guests over - forget about it. There seems to not even be enough space in the garages for residents with cars, let alone guests. The lack of guest parking is unacceptable, especially when considering the number of apartments between two buildings, and the fact that the building location is off the highway and therefore there is no accessible street parking. Due to the parking situation, I feel like I am never able to have guests over, which almost defeats the purpose of me moving to the apartment building with hopes of more space to spend time with friends/family. Secondly, it is clear that corners were cut during construction, as evident by a leaky toilet, leaky kitchen sink, leaky dishwasher, stained bathtub, a cracked wall, and a temperature control that was not working - all upon moving in. Finally, there needs to be organization when dealing with packages. Although the Luxor system has been helpful for small packages, larger packages remain disorganized and difficult to find since they are either in the mail room, in a closet, in the office, or at the front entryway.

UPDATE (changed from 3 stars to 4): Despite having to submit several service requests, building management has been pretty good about responding and fixing problems quickly. Package pick up remains quite messy, especially as more people move in and 1 room seems to manage packages for 2 buildings. Parking remains tough for guests, though they have implemented a permit system - not sure how well this is being enforced however. Some perks have also been added, such as free work out classes and sometimes free food events, which is nice. Also have discovered many parks and trails nearby (see photos) which is definitely a big pro for me and a nice change of pace vs. living downtown.

Beautiful units and common areas, with lounge, play room and bowling lane. Very convenient location within walking distance to Alewife station. Pet friendly and Cambridge Discovery Park is just next "door", great for walks with the doggies.
