Services Kairos Counseling Offers

Group Therapy: Group therapy is a modality of counseling that brings a number of people together to explore their experiences of a particular theme or struggle in their lives. Groups can be “open” or “closed.” Open groups have members that have entered at different times and hence have a differing histories with the group. Closed groups begin with a certain number of members (8-12 members being optimal) and those members continue with no new entries into the group throughout the life of the group. Topics vary with the need of the members in all groups.

Sandplay Therapy: Sandplay is a symbolic mode of therapy developed for use with children who cannot always “tell” us what is wrong or what emotional hurts they have but later extended to all age groups. It involves the use of a 20” by 30” by 4” deep tray filled with sand, and a collection of various toys, in which is created a “picture” or “image.” It may be used when that with which we are struggling is not readily identifiable to our thinking but which may “come out” when we let our hands and the available toys do the talking. The image developed in the sand may give us a pictorial view of the conflict we are experiencing.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) looks at how we come to the thinking that motivates our decisions to action. How we assign meaning to events, dialogue, thoughts and feelings become the focus of exploration.

This exploration would have as an intent, clarifying what still works and what has to be revised on the basis of a changing reality.

Existential therapy focuses on how we experience life on a day to day basis and how our values and philosophy of life are connected with our emotional responses. The individual is encouraged to allow themselves to experience the anxiety(s) that arise with the events life throws them into and to explore and re-evaluate assumptions and preconceptions they have about the things they face in life.

Jungian therapy is based on the idea that our non-conscious processes can be accessed in order to reorganize our approach to our life. Dream materials, conscious fantasy contents and sandplay are some of the modes of connecting with the non-conscious contents. The psyche of the individual is thought to be able to provide for that individual the best possible approach for that individual to take to developing his/her life capacities even if the conscious awareness has not yet recognized what that approach looks like.
