Families of children with special needs often find the special education process both overwhelming and frustrating. They may find the process intimidating, making it difficult for them to explain their concerns or their child's needs. Families often times feel alone in this very complicated process. As a Special Education Child Advocate I offer support and assistance to families so that they can better navigate the special education process. Families no longer have to feel alone in the process. That support begins with an initial consultation that helps me develop a clear understanding of your child, their unique needs and your concerns. By gaining a detailed understanding of your child's areas of strength and areas of difficulty, I can better help develop an appropriate plan for your child. I will review your child's educational and developmental history with you. Together we will discuss each area of learning and how your child does in each area. It is equally important to discuss how your child does when they are not in school, how they do socially or even when doing homework. All of this will assist me in gaining a better understanding of your child. I will then take some time to review all of the records and documentation that you have.

Once the records have been reviewed I will have a meeting with you so that we can begin to develop a plan of action. I will help you understand your child's rights and your own, as well as helping you to understand what to expect at the meetings. I will assist you in gaining a better understanding of the terminology or language of special education. I will work to help you gain a better understanding of the testing and evaluations that have been done on your child, and how to use the findings of those evaluations. Additionally, I will work to prepare you, the student (if appropriate), and outside professionals for meetings. Having a better understanding of what to expect at the meetings allows everyone to be a more effective advocate for your child. I will accompany you to any meetings that you have at school on behalf of your child.
