About Robert Ruark Bed and Breakfast Inn

We at the Robert Ruark Bed and Breakfast would like to welcome you to Historic Southport, North Carolina, and to the elegant Victorian residence that inspired many of Author Robert Ruark's great literary works. We hope to make your stay a memorable and pleasant one. This magnificent Bed and Breakfast was built as a Victorian mansion in 1890 for River Pilot Captain Adkins. The high class, elegant Bed and Breakfast is graced with original stained glass lancet windows, cornice brackets and many fine examples of a local architectural elements known as the Southport Bow. Adkins' grandson, popular author Robert Ruark, a world renowned syndicated columnist who became a house hold name during WWII, spent much of his childhood in the mansion and penned his novel The Old Man and the Boy as a memoir of his boyhood years spent in Southport.
